I wholeheartedly endorse San Juan River guide Paul Freeman of Roughrider Guide Service.
I have had the good fortune of fishing many western waters over the past three decades and can tell you the service of a knowledgeable guide is a common denominator of all successful trips to new places. This is why when a few friends and I planned a recent inaugural trip to the world-class San Juan, we called on Paul.

After a friendly greeting, his understanding of the river and its fish becomes immediately apparent. He knows how to catch them too. We were into fish immediately and caught them all day. It gets better: Paul has a contagious enthusiasm. I am not sure who is more excited when a monster rainbow trout is finally in the net – the client or the guide! Great River. Great Guide. Great Fish. Great Times. In the waning moments on the last day of the trip, a friend and I walked down the path to overlook the renowned Texas Hole. We inquired a caster in a drift boat as to how he was doing. “Great” he beamed. “I have been coming here for years and finally hired a guide; I should have done that before.” Continuing “Think about hiring one yourself.” Neither I nor my buddy needed to respond. Looking at each other smugly, we knew we had made a great move by hiring Paul.

Having fished the San Juan River with Paul Freeman in early April 2006, this may serve as a referral letter for Paul as a San Juan River guide, of Roughrider Guide Service.

As a beginner/novice fly fisherman, the half day I spent with Paul at the outset of my vacation led to success the balance of my 5 day stay at the San Juan River. Regardless of your fly fishing expertise, I firmly believe you will still learn from Paul if you ever decide to use his services. I found him really easy to converse with and our short time together flew by quickly. His coaching skills are fantastic; he's patient, enthusiastic, responsive, adaptive, friendly, courteous, proactive, extemely knowledgable of the river, equipment, the bugs, and most importantly where and how to catch your dream fish!

He put me into fish immediately and if it weren't for my ineptness at the onset, I'm certain that I'd have caught many more and even bigger fish than what I did while I was with him. Nonetheless, with his coaching (he was a school teacher), I still managed to land 9 really nice fish in challenging water in a little over 2 hours, lost 3-4 big ones and missed hooking too many countless others to tell you about. In all, it was a great experience and money well spent!

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, I'd suggest you 'hook-up' with Paul. You'll have no regrets and only positive memories that you will never forget!

Paul,

Just quick note to say thanks for the wonderful guided fishing trip. I caught my largest fish on a fly rod-several times!! I will never forget my first trip to the San Juan. I will be back.

Being new to the sport, I truly appreciated your knowledge and expertise communicated in an easy and patient way. I learned about the river, trout, flies, rigging, casting, and mending (oh, the mending). The skills you taught me have taken me to the next level of my fly fishing experience.

Thanks, Greg-Tempe, AZsan juan river guides, fly fishing guide, wade trips, wade trips, san juan river guides, baetis

Paul, I just got back from my first trip to the San Juan River and it was an amazing experience. I want to thank Paul Freeman of Roughrider Guide Service for making it a lifetime memory. First fish of the day was a 22 inch monster rainbow and I landed an additional seven 20 inch fish before the day ended. I am sure results like this aren't guaranteed but Paul knows the river, knows where the fish are and (best of all) knows how to treat people! I will certainly be back and can recommend him highly!
